Nee, dit is zeker nog geen belofte dat ik langzaamaan terug boven water kom, maar wie weet…
Vandaag kwam ik in mijn tuin in elk geval iets zo moois tegen, dat ik het jullie niet wilde onthouden!

De rechte koraalzwam (Ramaria stricta) is een paddenstoel die zijn naam echt niet gestolen heeft. Hij zou vrij algemeen voorkomen, vooral in loofbossenken. Toch, als je de kaarten op waarnemingen.be en waarneming.nl, heb ik de indruk dat ie in de kustprovincies minder voorkomt dan wat dieper in het binnenland.
Er zijn een heleboel koraalzwammen, maar deze soort is gemakkelijk te herkennen doordat de afzonderlijke ’takjes’ vrijwel parallel en recht omhoog groeien. Bovendien is het een van de weinige soorten die hoofdzakelijk op dode houtresten (hier de stronk van een gewone vlier) groeien. Zelfs als ze een keer ‘gewoon uit de grond’ lijken te komen, blijken ze meestal op begraven houtresten te zitten.
Of deze paddenstoel eetbaar is? Volgens het boekje dat ik gebruik (‘De grote paddenstoelengids voor onderweg‘ van Ewald Gerhardt) is hij ‘ongenietbaar of niet getest’, en elders lees ik dat in elk geval een aantal koraalzwammen giftig zijn, en dat eten van welke soort dan ook (de witte en de asgrauwe koraalzwam zouden wel eetbaar zijn) wordt afgeraden als je niet 100% zeker bent van je determinatie…

But today I found something beautiful in my garden, that I couldn’t resist posting a picture.

It’s immediately obvious where this Upright Coral fungus got its name from. It’s said to be a rather common fungus, most found in hardwoodforests. But according to the maps on waarnemingen.be and waarneming.nl (two sites enabling you to register your nature observations in Belgium and the Netherlands), it seems to be found rather rarely in the coastal provinces, and only slightly more often further inland.

There are several species of Coral fungus, but this one can easily been recognized by its upright growing ’twigs’, and the fact that this species grows from dead wood. (But beware: sometimes it grows from buried dead wood, and seems to sprout out of the soil…)

And the quasi inevitable question if this mushroom is edible? Well, according to the book I use, it is ‘unknown or not tested’. Other sources warn that some species of Coral fungus are poisonous, and that you should never eat one of the edible species unless you are 100% of your identification…
